Lost Images from The Magnificent Ambersons Here are some images that were cut from Ambersons during the editing process.
Wilbur's funeral. We're never really sure if Fanny is more upset over the loss of her brother, or over the lack of attention that she receives from Eugene.
A scene from the ball held for George's return home for the holidays in sophomore year at school.
Another ballroom scene with Eugene and Jack.
Eugene and Jack discuss George and Isabel at the ball.
Lucy, Fanny, Uncle John (Fanny's brother), and George at the ball.
A young Eugene waves hello to some of the townsfolk on his way to court Isabel.
George is greeted as he enters the the Friends of the Ace, the local secret society. George insists on being president, and threatens to take away the clubroom if he's not elected.
This image is from a scene that came right after George's argument with Uncle Jack about Isabel and Eugene (i.e. the bathroom scene). George is furious about the situation, and tries to avoid Isabel by walking upstairs to the ballroom. Isabel follows, and George, having no place else to go, stands motionless with his back to her. She tries to wish him goodnight, not knowing that he is angry with her, while he remains still and only able to utter a few terse words. This is a great example of deep focus photography, in which objects in both the foreground and background are in focus. Welles used deep focus extensively in Citizen Kane. Here, Welles uses size as a means of representing power, so Isabel's smaller image compared to George is symbolic of his power over her.
George and Isabel in her bedroom, discussing her relationship with Eugene.
Isabel writes a letter to George, asking for his forgiveness for all the suffering that she has caused him over Eugene, and reassuring him that she will no longer see him.
The deserted Amberson mansion. This was probably part of another sequence that wasn't in the film, where George walks through the mansion for the last time.
Scenes from the Morgan's stable. After the ball, Eugene and Lucy return home in Eugene's horseless carriage. Here we first find out that Lucy likes George, but is bothered by his personality. With characteristic diplomacy, Eugene explains "You need only three things to explain all that's good and bad about George... He's Isabel's only child. He's an Amberson. He's a boy."
